Finding sufficient activities to keep the children contented during the summer holidays can be a daunting task, however this is never a problem on the Suffolk Coast, where the variety of ways to entertain youngsters will leave you spoilt for choice.

One of the most eagerly awaited events of summer is the British Open Crabbing Championship, held each year in the beautiful coastal village of Walberswick. A wonderful day out for children of all ages, the event takes place over a 90-minute period. Armed with nothing but a line and bait of their choice participants aim to catch the heaviest crab in the hope of becoming the next British Open Crabbing Champion.

A fee of £1 is payable to enter with equipment such as buckets, bait and lines available to buy on site for a small charge and money raised going to charities and good causes. Refreshments on the day are available from RNLI stalls and you can purchase unique souvenirs such as the popular 'I caught crabs at Walberswick' T-shirts.

The person who catches the single heaviest crab receives an engraved Silver Salver, together with a 'gold' medal and £50 prize money, while runners up receive 'silver' and 'bronze' medals as well as £30 and £15 prize money respectively. All entrants also take home a pot of finest crab paste sponsored by Shippams.

The British Open Crabbing Championship 2008 takes place on Sunday 10th August with proceeds from this year's event going to the Walberswick Sea Defence project www.walberswickseadefence.org.uk

Registration is from 2pm and Crabbing is from 3pm to 4:30pm
