A WINTERS TALE - An EXHIBITION by TONY PICK

Jan 29 2010

6th Feb – 31st March
Coastal Images Gallery, High Street, Aldeburgh

When professional photographer Tony Pick decided to up sticks from his Hertfordshire home and take his wife and family to live on the East Anglian coast, he was clearly a man on a mission.  Not only was he waving goodbye to a successful career as a press photographer and partnership in a busy agency, he was moving into what was, for him, the unchartered waters of landscape photography.
His initial idea was to make a living from selling his own seascapes and landscapes from the family’s first gallery when they moved to Aldeburgh in 2001.  It was a quirky old boathouse right on the beach which had never been used commercially before.
Nine years on, Tony and his wife Lizzie are proud owners of the Coastal Images gallery, on Aldeburgh High Street – a business that encapsulates the evocative spirit of the coast through Tony’s lens, while also teaching others to make the most of their photographic talents in tailor-made workshops.
The Suffolk coast has long been the haunt of artists drawn to the area for its unmistakable beauty.  The whispering of the wind off the sea and the haunting cry of the curlew on the marsh has inspired generations of musicians, while canvas and camera lenses alike revel in the wide skies and bright light synonymous with this most easterly part of England.
The landscapes and seascapes that drew him to the area are a huge inspiration to Tony who extends his collection of images with the changing seasons.
His latest work features beautiful images of the Suffolk coastline in the most dramatic winter weather seen for a generation.  The unique photographs were inspired by the simplicity of the subject matter using monochrome and colour to further capture the spirit of winter  2009/2010.
Taken at various times of the day, to make best use of the natural light available, some are in instantly recognisable locations to those familiar with the area – The House in the Clouds and The Meare, at Thorpeness; the Martello Tower, in Aldeburgh; the unexpected beauty of a beach transformed into a snowfield - plus a new perspective on views normally taken for granted.  They combine to recreate the magical atmosphere of a winter wonderland in all its glory.
