Your wedding album is the ultimate reminder of your special day and something that will be cherished by generations to come. That is why it is crucial that you find the right photographer for the job and get them booked as soon as you can to avoid disappointment...

When is the right time to book a photographer?
‘As early as possible,' says Ipswich-based wedding and theatre photographer Mike Kwasniak, who is a qualified member of the Master Photographers Association and the Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers. 'These days if people want the best venues they need to plan at least 18 months ahead, and the same applies to booking a photographer for your wedding.'

One of Mike's first and most crucial pieces of advice is to find a wedding photographer you feel completely at ease with and who fully understands your requirements. 'When you first approach a photographer it is important that you examine their work closely. Don't just make do with seeing a collection of his or her favourite images; ask to see albums that contain complete weddings.

'Look carefully at the people in the pictures and ask yourself whether they are well organised against pleasing backgrounds - and whether they look relaxed and happy of course.'

Mike also warns that some photographers will subcontract their work out - sometimes without informing their clients beforehand - in which case you might be faced with a complete stranger arriving to take your photos on the day.

'Always ask the photographer whether he or she will be taking your photographs personally and, if not, find out who will and ask to see examples of their work and meet them as well,' he adds.

Another big consideration is your preferred style of photography - do you want the photographer to take a formal approach or are you aiming for something more relaxed and spontaneous?

'There are some people who do want the traditional photos with various combinations of family and friends, although more and more people are opting for a wedding album that will tell the story of their day,' says Mike.

'Find out if your photographer is able to offer this service. Some photographers work with two or more cameras - often with an assistant - and record the events of the day in a 'photojournalistic' fashion - usually starting with shots of the bride preparing at her home. This requires less posing for the camera and is much more relaxed and spontaneous - capturing all aspects of the wedding.'

As far as the cost of your wedding photography is concerned, this will vary considerably depending on who you choose and the packages they offer. Some photographers provide a limited number of proofs that, after a set period, must be returned; favourite shots from the proof album are then removed and remounted in an album. Others may let you keep your proofs and have a new set of prints made for your album.

'Bear in mind that some photographers work alone and others work with an assistant,' says Mike. 'It’s reasonable to expect a small team to work more efficiently and quickly than a single person and, ultimately, you will get what you pay for,' he concludes.
