Sixties Chic on the Suffolk Coast

Oct 28 2008

An incredibly fertile period for British designers generally, 1960s' architecture transformed the middle class home from the conventional to the vibrant, its strict, almost dogmatic crusade for form and function, an overhang of the modernist movement of the 1920s and 1930s.

Great examples abound in London but it might be something of a surprise that the sleepy little coastal town of Aldeburgh with its Tudor Moot Hall and Victorian sea front properties should be sheltering a fantastic example of 60s chic.

Hidden away in wonderful private gardens just a step from the beach is a property that exemplifies the rightful resurgence of enthusiasm for the best of 60s architecture. The Wooden House is not only an exceedingly comfortable and well finished property, it is also superbly practical, its Colt design using high quality cedar for its external walls ensuring that it remains cool in summer and toasty warm in winter. Outside is a large and fascinating garden with attractive ponds, slopes and hidden seating areas and the large expanse of windows draws the beautiful garden into the house. Every room enjoys wonderful garden views.

A contemporary log burning stove, Habitat and Conran furnishings have been artfully chosen both for their quality and contemporary comfort and the bathrooms and kitchen are both spacious and wonderfully equipped.

This stunning property can be booked for holidays and short breaks through Suffolk Cottage Holidays and with its own private drive, parking area and proximity to the beach and the wonderful restaurants and pubs of Aldeburgh would, I believe, make a fine alternative for anyone seeking some aesthetic interest along with the sea side holiday.
