Woodbridge (probably from the Norse or Saxon meaning "Wooden's Town") is an ancient market town with plenty to see - attractive medieval, Dutch and Tudor buildings and several fascinating museums in the centre of the town and down by the river, always busy with sailing boats and yachts, with fantastic views over the river to Sutton Hoo and the Tide Mill.

WAY TO GO: From the station car park go past the Riverside Theatre and turn right onto the road. After 150 metres turn right, cross the railway line and follow the path to the Tide Mill. Then follow the surfaced riverside path all the way to Kyson Hill - National Trust (where those with wheelchairs and buggies will have to turn back.) If you want a short walk simply turn right on to the gravel path which takes you the other side of the water meadows and thus back to the sailing club and the station.

For the full 4-mile walk take the unsurfaced path up a slight incline before bearing left down to a small strip of beach (if the tide is high retrace your steps and turn left into Sandy Lane, rejoining the walk at Broom Heath.) At low and mid tide you can walk along the beach and then bear right onto a narrow path. Follow the path and then go up the bank until you reach a junction with a minor road, turn right along the road for 600 metres before turning right into Broom Heath and from there to Sandy Lane. You will see Porter's Wood on your right. Shortly after the wood is a metalled surfaced road. Turn right again at the main road (Ipswich Road). After 15 metres cross the road and follow the concrete steps and the path into Portland Crescent. Turn right into Warren Hill Road past the cemetery. At the junction, turn left along the Ipswich Road to Cumberland Street. Turn right at the end of Cumberland Street into Quay Street and then cross the Ipswich Road at the zebra crossing to the Station and the car park.

DON'T MISS: The footbridge over the railway - attractive metal work, The Tide Mill (take time to have a look round, it is the oldest surviving Tide Mill in the country), views over the river - wonderful, Sutton Hoo directly opposite and great views as you walk down the river. The river itself is fascinating at any time of year and any tide, but for a really rich variety of birds take a walk at low tide when you will hopefully see loads of waders including oyster catchers, terns, shellduck and redshank and in the winter wildfowl. The water meadows to the right of the path are carpeted with wild flowers in spring and early summer and there are ancient pollarded willow. In the distance is St Mary's Church. Kyson Point - National Trust land. Woodland at Porter's Wood. Some lovely old cedars etc in the cemetery. In Cumberland Street is Barton's House (one of the so called Woodbridge Wits - a great poet), The Abbey School was once the town house of Thomas Seckford.

SUITABILITY: The riverside path is suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs, but the gravel path can get very wet in bad weather.

LENGTH: Four miles
