The Lemon Tree: Bringing some oohlala to Suffolk

The Lemon Tree Bistro, Framlingham

There is plenty that Suffolk and Provence have in common: beautiful countryside, a rich history stretching back centuries, friendly locals with a laid-back approach to life. Now that The Lemon Tree has opened in the picturesque market town of Framlingham, we can add one more: fantastic, value-for-money bistro.

"The idea behind the bistro is to give people a friendly and relaxing place to eat really tasty food at a sensible price," manager Andrew Perry told us. "So in the morning, we have quality coffees and amazing pastries; then a simple, fresh and vibrant lunchtime menu; and a more traditional bistro-style menu for the evenings."

Perfectly placed just off the market square on the road up towards Framlingham's stunning medieval castle, the bistro is light, airy and surprisingly roomy inside, plenty big enough to create a vibrant atmosphere during evening service. The menu features local ingredients where possible, including Suffolk Blue Cheese, Suffolk Ham and the famous local speciality, Revett's Sausages, and really does have something for everyone - at all times of day.

Standout dishes include the pigeon, walnut and Suffolk Blue salad starter, beautifully presented and a great balance of flavours; the fresh and punchy sea bass with fennel coleslaw salad; and perhaps the bistro's signature dish, "The Tree" beef burger, succulent and juicy, served on a toasted bun. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, when the bistro is open until 11pm, the menus are supplemented with further dishes from the specials board, providing even more choice for the later diner seeking a more ...more formal dining experience.

All this at a very fair price - and with friendly staff and a decent wine list to boot: The Lemon Tree is further proof that Suffolk can match the best of the rest when it comes to holidaying. Even Provence...
