The last rainy days of February

On Friday morning, in poor light and sometimes slight drizzle, I picked my way around the tetrad between Hulver Road and Ellough cart track.  Away from the roads it was somewhat muddy underfoot with three sections of the supposed footpath actually a ploughed field.  There were many feeders around the field edges so it wasn’t surprising to see lots of Red-legged Partridge, presumably released.  However I did see a single Grey Partridge too and as they are apparently harder to breed, possibly it was a “real” one.  As I was driving, I caught a fleeting glimpse of what may have been a Barn Owl but couldn’t be sure. Fortunately I saw it a few minutes later perched on a fence post nearby.  The only other bird of prey I saw was a Common Buzzard, surprisingly close to human habitation I thought.
