The Froize, Chillesford

The Froize, Chillesford

Originally a pair of game keeper’s cottages, The Froize has been licensed since the 1970s – first as an ale house and now as a beautiful country restaurant.

The origin of the name – Froize is somewhat curious and doubtful. Tales of an old French savoury pancake made with even older bacon! known as a froise are true, but not very exciting or romantic!

Or, perhaps, a medieval Suffolk word for a friar – well, The Froize is situated on Friar’s Walk which extends from Butley Priory and wends its way past the front door ending up via Sudbourne park, on Orford quay.
