Castle House, an elegant country house in Dedham, was the home, studio and grounds where Sir Alfred Munnings lived and painted for 40 years. Today it is open to the public, with a large collection representing his life's work.
Annual special exhibitions show private collection loans of painting nr usually show to the public.
Well worth a visit, it is set in around 40 acres of grounds with delightful gardens. Castle House is a mixture of Tudor and Georgian periods, and has been beautifully restored so that its well proportioned rooms now house much of the original Munnings furniture and a superb collection of his paintings.
There is an excellent exhibit of his life's work - he was pretty prolific - drawings from a sketchbook when he was just 8, advertising posters made in his early 20s, portraits, horse and gypsy painting and some adorable landscapes. A great variety of styles and mediums - you really need to give yourself plenty of time to take it all in. There is a tea room so you can always have a break and a reviving cup of tea.
The studio is fascinating so don't miss it.
