Lucam at Butley Mills, Butley (Sleeps 4)
Lucam, Butley Mills. Just a minute from the village of Butley, close to the Suffolk coast at Orford this newly decorated and very comfortable two bedroom holiday apartment conversion is part of an historic mill building; Lucam has one twin and one bunk bedroom, open plan living room with fully equipped kitchen, dining table for four and sitting room. The bathroom has a bath with overhead shower, wash basin and w.c. There is a large laundry on the ground floor of Butley Mills with washing machines and dryers.
A Lucam is "a structure in the roof of a mill that projects out from the building to allow the hoist housed therein to winch up loads clear of the mill and give them protection from the weather", and it is from this structure that this apartment takes its name. The lucam itself has been converted into a gallery seating area in the apartment, with stunning views across the reedbeds and down the river through the picture window.
You would be hard pressed to find a more attractive location. To one side is the mill pond, with a small copse beyond, which eventually leads to Rendlesham Forest; to the other reed beds and the Alde and Ore river. An ideal spot for anyone keen on bird watching, walking or cycling. This is a superb location for bird watching - look out for the marsh harriers, oyster catchers, avocets and owls which all nest near by.
Lucam sits on a Site of Special Scientific Interest, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and within a former working mill, with functioning sluice. Beautiful views in all directions!
