Boot Cottage, Iken (Sleeps 4)

Looking for comfort in the countryside?  Look no further.  Boot Cottage has been completely renovated for letting in 2014.  Top quality beds, spacious and roomy bathrooms, lovely curtains, well equipped kitchen, log burning stove... the list goes on.  But what is special about Boot Cottage, Iken, is the finishing touches.  The bathroom windows have shutters, the kitchen has been fitted with a lovely stable door so that you can make the most of the views.  There is even outside hot and cold running water (with shower attachment) so that you can wash the dog after a long ramble across the fields.

Within a mile of Iken; a tiny sprawling hamlet, its boundaries unclear.  There are no shops or pubs these days, although you can buy some excellent local produce outside several cottages.  There is a good riding stables where riding lessons are available, and a canoe hire company.  Apart from that there are areas of forest, marshland and meadowland, a wonderful river - the Alde - and a very special ancient, thatched church perched on a mound jutting out into the wide River Alde.  Make time to visit - at dawn or dusk or in the middle of the day, the place is utterly haunting.  St Botolph Church is part of the panoply of Suffolk mysticism, an element in an ancient story of the birth of England, of grey mists and the sad cry of wading birds hovering low over the mudflats.

Take the road in the other direction and you will soon reach Orford; a charming small town on the Suffolk Coast. Orford has a wonderful Norman Castle (just the keep has survived intact); stand at its summit to enjoy spectacular views of the coast, the village and the sea. Wander down Quay Street and you will see that the sea is very close to the town, separated only by a narrow shingle bank, which runs all the way from Aldeburgh in the north to Shingle Street in the south, and the Alde river (here known as the Ore).

Sleeps 4 - 1 double, 1 twin
