Top prizes, four BAFTA and a clutch of Oscar nominations including Best Film were heaped on Precious, the story of an obese, illiterate, black 16-year-old called Claireece ‘Precious’ Jones (Gabourey Sidibe). Precious is abused and twice made pregnant by her father, but this dire situation becomes a catalyst for change, perhaps banishing the pretty, white, thin, blonde girl who habitually returns her stare when she looks in a mirror. Director Lee Daniels thought he was making the film for the African-American audience but says happily:  ‘It’s great to see so many white faces out there !’
