Leo Tolstoy (Christopher Plummer) lives out his final year, still loving his wife (Helen Mirren) but agonised. Should he bequeath his work to the nation and straiten his wife’s later circumstances ? She, however, strongly disapproves of the idea. Enter Tolstoy’s PA (James McAvoy) and a literary fanatic (Paul Giamatti) each with his own agenda. This fantastic cast sweeps the action along, accruing an Oscar nomination for Dame Helen.
