13/5/2010 – Woodchat Shrike at Winterton Dunes
Ok, so it’s been there for two weeks but I’ve had other things on. Popped over this morning and had great views of this highly photogenic species. I was even quite pleased with a couple of my shots. There wasn’t much else about so I didn’t stay long. On the way home I stopped at Breydon Water (ASDA car park), partly to have a look and partly to let the morning traffic subside. The tide was rising and pushing all the birds off the mud towards me which was ideal. There were several Curlew already on the banks and these were joined by a Whimbrel later. Only 2 Avocet, but 40 Black-tailed Godwit, 4 Bar-tailed Godwit (one in near summer plumage) and most surprising (for me anyway) 34 Greenshank. A sprinkling of Dunlin, 2 Knot, a couple of dozen Ringed Plover and Redshank put the wader species up to 11.
On Tuesday I went down to Peasenhall and Rendham to do three tetrad surveys in a row. Nearly 5 hours constantly watching, listening and counting is quite intense so I may split them up for the other surveys. There wasn’t much unusual during the surveys but I got reports of Owls and Buzzard from the locals, so maybe next time or in the winter?
